The First time manager: gets the best out of themselves, gets the best out of others and makes the right decisions for the business.

This is what organisations need managers to be, but they are often not.  Being a manager isn’t easy and for those experiencing management for the first time, it can be extremely challenging.

A 2016 survey found that

  • 20% of first-time managers are doing a poor job according to their subordinates,
  • 26% of first-time managers felt they were not ready to lead others to begin with
  • 60% said they never received any training when they transitioned into their first leadership role.

Against this background it is little wonder that 50% of managers in organisations are assessed by their reports and managers as being ineffective.  In terms of productivity, staff attrition, low morale and missed targets, the commercial implications are obvious.

So what to do?  L&D professionals source training and development that will support their managers and, for good reasons, often focus on what we used to term, ‘soft skills’ or ‘people skills’.  At Kaplan we believe management training, should address both the technical competence of managers on the job, as well as their confidence in engaging with and managing their people.    There isn’t an ‘off the shelf’ option for this, organisations are different. One size does not fit all.  What might have been done in the past may not now be relevant to the commercial challenges you currently face. Your organisation needs to develop the kind of managers that your organisation needs right now.

Join Kaplan Leadership & Professional Development on Thursday 23rd March in London, to find out how you can develop your new managers to meet the organisational challenges of today and tomorrow.

At this interactive event, L&D professions and business sponsors will have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in a demanding business environment: tough decisions will have to be made, the human implications of those decisions managed, and all within the context of ‘commercial acumen’. For a manager it’s all in a day’s work.
