LEADING THROUGH CHANGE : HEALTH CARE

The management team of a commissioning division in the health service, responsible for the recruitment and professional development of doctors and dentists were facing turbulent change and an uncertain future. They needed to equip themselves to lead their teams through a period of 2 years of this uncertainty which would inevitably include headcount reduction and recruitment freezes. With the quality of patient care as their overarching purpose, how could they keep their people focussed on the bigger picture and stay motivated, as well as address all the tough management challenges they would be facing. What would the impact be on the morale and motivation of the leadership team itself? How would they stay strong?

We created a flexible, two-tier programme of leadership development consisting of learning days and half days, facilitated action learning sets and individual coaching spanning 18 months. The programme started with a workshop on leading through change and the modules that followed were created ‘just-in-time’ – so that each one addressed a current reality that the team needed to address. The coaching support was invaluable, and provided leaders not only with the support they needed, but gave them a model to follow and use with their own teams.

Two years on, the management team emerged stronger, having acquired invaluable experience of live change leadership. An unexpected benefit was the upskilling of the next level, now ready to lead in the new world.
