DevOps Engineering: “One of the best decisions I have made in my life.”

Bamidele Jayeola

Do you have preconceptions of what an apprenticeship is? Do you believe that apprenticeships are mainly for school leavers? We recently spoke with Bamidele Jayeola, who provided feedback on his training in DevOps Engineering.

Can you tell us about yourself and your career history so far?

I am currently enrolled in Kaplan’s DevOps Engineering Apprenticeship programme, and five months in I can say with the utmost confidence that it’s one of the best decisions I have made in my life to date.

In the past few years, I’ve gone from retail to a security officer, to my first role in a very professional environment off the back of a three-month AWS boot camp.

What made you go down the apprenticeship route?

Although I had a basic understanding of cloud computing, choosing this apprenticeship allowed me to go straight into work but with a big focus on still developing my knowledge in a structured way. This is very important to me as it was a massive career change, and as opposed to learning in just a classroom environment, I could then apply my knowledge at work immediately. While working, I can now envision how what I was learning is going to benefit me in the workplace.

“I can say with the utmost confidence that it’s one of the best decisions I have made in my life to date.”

Another reason why I opted for the apprenticeship is that I can still enjoy the work life, without the great emphasis on my performance as everyone understands that I’m still learning.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

The lecturers are very knowledgeable and the course materials are really good, there’s no overload of information. I also have lots of support from my work coach, and it’s not all just focused on my work but also on my well-being and mental state.

Did you view apprenticeships differently before starting your journey?

I had a few misconceptions about joining an apprenticeship programme. Before this, I was considering jumping straight into a junior role. I believed that an apprenticeship would take up too much time from my work, but they go hand in hand together well.

“I believe that you can definitely teach an old dog new tricks.”

I have attended all of my live classes, and Kaplan has been very flexible with my work schedule. There is more than enough time to do self-learning.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others?

Yes, I would greatly recommend anyone looking to upskill themselves or in the middle of a career change to consider an apprenticeship.

Another misconception that I had was regarding age. I am in the 26 - 30 age bracket, and prior to joining I believed that apprenticeships were only for those aged 16 - 25. Since then, I’ve met individuals with no experience, and those with years of experience in IT, all young and old. And now, I believe that you can definitely teach an old dog new tricks.

If you think an apprenticeship would suit you, have a look at our programmes for the great range available.
