Why take on an apprentice?

Apprenticeships benefit both you and your employee. An apprentice could be in the early stages of their career, and their passion and willingness to integrate themselves in the workplace will make them a great addition to your team. In turn, they'll learn valuable professional and technical skills, all while earning. Apprenticeships provide a structured and formalised training scheme perfect for any new entrant into your business.

Or your apprentice might also be further along in their career, and want to attain a higher level qualification or change roles whilst staying in work. This way you gain a highly qualified employee but not lose them whilst they study.

How does it work?

The Apprenticeship standards have been developed by employers, professional bodies, training providers and the government. Which means the development and demonstration of key skills and behaviours are given equal if not more weighting to the technical knowledge. In addition to completing the exams or assignments of a professional qualification, an apprentice must also pass an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their programme.

During the EPA, apprentices will pull together all of their technical knowledge and their skills and behaviour training, demonstrating competence across the whole Apprenticeship standard. This broader focus gives you greater confidence apprentices can deliver the best results within their role (and not just be good at passing exams) and will be more suitable for progression opportunities as they arise.

What makes this different from just studying for a qualification?

There are a few key differences:

With the Apprenticeship, there is an equal focus on the development of skills and behaviours rather than just focusing on the attainment of technical knowledge. This will require the apprenticeship to include training for skills and behaviours which can be gained through us or on the job training.

To achieve the Apprenticeship the apprentice will also need to complete an end point assessment to show they have learned and applied the full range of knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the Apprenticeship standard. Apprentices will gain a certificate from the Institute of Apprenticeships for the standard they have achieved.

On an Apprenticeship scheme, 20% of the apprentice’s working time must be spent in training and development, including professional qualification study, shadowing, mentoring, 1-2-1s and technical training. This ensures the training links to the workplace.

Who can be an apprentice?

The government has an ambitious target to train 3 million apprentices by 2022, and the Apprenticeship Standards are more inclusive than ever before. Under the standards, current employees and university graduates are now both eligible for Apprenticeships, as long as there is substantive new learning taking place. Apprenticeship programmes are available from Level 2 (entry level) right the way up to Masters degree level* (Level 7), and there is no age restriction.

Due to the many different levels and Industry aligned apprenticeships you can use them to provide a structured career path at most levels of your business.

The apprentices must be working in a suitable role that will allow them to demonstrate the learning outcomes as required by the apprenticeship standard.

* You will not receive a masters degree upon completion of the Level 7 Apprenticeship

Funding an Apprenticeship

If your company pays the Apprenticeship Levy you can use this to fund the programme. If not, you'll only need to pay 5% of the Apprenticeship training costs, as the government will cover the remaining 95%. This also applies to marginal Levy paying organisations who don’t have enough to fund all of the Apprenticeship training they'd like to. If your organisation has less than 50 employees and you employ an Apprentice aged under 19, you don’t need to pay the 5%, so taking on an apprentice is free, you just have to pay for their exams.

If you pay the Levy, you'll have access to a Digital account where your Levy funds will accumulate until you’re ready to commence Apprenticeship training. You'll need to use an accredited-training provider like Kaplan to make payments from the account. You have 24 months to spend your Levy. If you use all the Levy and still want to engage in more Apprenticeship training, you will be eligible for the 5%/95% co-investment detailed above.

Please note that you are not allowed to pay for Accountancy exams from your Apprenticeship levy.

There is also a £1,000 grant for employers taking on 16-18 year olds. And you can get employers National Insurance relief for any apprentice under 25.
