Webinar: the secrets to gaming apprenticeships

How can you ensure that you are at the forefront of employing new talent in the gaming industry?

Many employers are aware that the war for talent is a current issue. Businesses are finding it harder than ever to recruit professionals, and it can be even more difficult to retain them. When it comes to Games Programming, the demand for skilled and knowledgeable programmers is extremely high, and yet not so easy to find.

Recently, we hosted a webinar, discussing the secrets to gaming apprenticeships with a diverse panel who offered their expertise.

Speakers included:

Ian Goodall is a recruitment professional passionate about helping create new pathways into the video games industry. He founded Grads in Games in 2010 to help create a much-needed bridge between Academia and the Games Industry.

The Games Assembly (TGA) Business Developer, Per-Anders, has been passionate about games since the Commodore era. With over 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry, he discussed the incredible opportunities TGA’s teachings will offer in partnership with Kaplan.

Key topics we explored

An introduction to the Game Programmer Level 7 Apprenticeship, focusing on:

  • How the apprenticeship was developed
  • What the content of the course will include
  • How the course will be delivered
  • The qualification and skills gained from the apprenticeship.

The panel discussed how the certification from the programme will be recognised at the equivalent skill level to a Master’s. Participation in the apprenticeship will significantly upskill existing programmers and graduates that need that extra knowledge of programming software such as C++.

The partnerships with Kaplan

We have partnered with industry giants in the Games Programming field, such as The Games Assembly, which is a Swedish company that will be providing tutors to deliver the content and support learners throughout their journey.

TGA is one of the best schools in the world for game development and design, and Kaplan is the first training provider to deliver this apprenticeship. While we are offering a more advanced version of the original Swedish programme, the successes are impressive as 90-95% of those who have completed the Swedish programme find employment within 6 months.

Into Games, another expert company in the industry has also partnered with Kaplan for this apprenticeship programme. Into Games supports and inspires thousands of young people every year on their career journey through mentorship, recruitment events, creative competition and networking.

The panel discussed our partnerships with Aardvark Swift, Grads in Games and Into Games. The organisations currently work with games studios to understand their talent needs and help recruit into the business.

Why the apprenticeship is beneficial to learners, and how employers can recruit for the programme

Comparing the apprenticeship programme to in-house training, the panel spoke about the differences between the two, and why the Games Programmer Level 7 apprenticeship is beneficial for both learners and employers.

Employers are currently seeking highly-skilled professionals but often can’t find them. So, the option to create or build their own skilled team is available via the apprenticeship route.

Application timings and cohort start dates

Applications for the programme's first cohort starting 30th January 2023 are open until the end of December. The next cohort is due to begin in September; however, an earlier one could be scheduled if there is employer demand. We can also run closed cohorts for a minimum of 15 apprentices for games studios requiring a programme focused on their business.

Funding

Whether your company is a Levy payer or not, our Kaplan experts approached the funding options available, and how the apprenticeship is accessible for businesses of all sizes.
