Accounts/Finance Assistant Apprenticeship Level 2

An Accounts/Finance Assistant is an integral part of the team responsible for maintaining an efficient and accurate finance function within a business. The Accounts/Finance Assistant is responsible for assisting the team of accountants with junior accounting duties.

An Accounts/Finance Assistant apprentice can work towards an AAT qualification.

Standards to be met

The Apprenticeship standard details the essential Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours that somebody would need to demonstrate to be a successful Accounts/Finance Assistant, this includes, General Business, Ethical Standards, Communication, Attention to Detail and Professionalism. Apprentices will need to show they are competent in all the areas detailed in the standard when they take End Point Assessment (see below).

The Knowledge areas of the standard will be covered through completion of the AAT qualification. Skills and Behaviours are developed through workshops, e-learning, workplace training and practical experience provided ‘on-the-job’.

Knowledge

    The Apprentice understands the awareness of elements of commercial law that may have an impact when working in accountancy, such as contracts, data protection or Anti Money Laundering.

  • Understanding your organisation keyboard_arrow_up keyboard_arrow_down

    The Apprentice understands their own role within the context of their organisation. Looking at transactional processes of accounting and their use within a finance function and what makes a business or organisation successful, through either buying or selling products or supplying services to a market.

    The Apprentice is aware of basic accounting concepts and double entry bookkeeping.

    As well as cost recording system within an organisation and bookkeeping controls, the apprentice is able to develop an understanding of the differences between Financial and Management Accounting.

    The apprentice understands corporate social responsibility (CSR), ethics and sustainability within organisations, they also understands the importance of the need to keep up-to-date with relevant policies, procedures, regulatory or system changes.

Skills

    The Apprentice will have the ability to examine data to identify issues, to reconcile data to minimise the chance of errors and to plan and review work as well as recognise and rectify errors.

    The apprentice can work by themselves and as part of a team, and effectively communicate with colleagues and stakeholders.

    They can demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and can relay financial information in a way that non-financial staff can understand.

    The apprentice can identify the right systems to use and the processes needed to complete tasks.

    They can use office and accounting packages, and maintain the security of the financial information they hold.

    The Apprentice has the ability to organise self, prioritise workload/activity to meet deadlines. Actively identifies team workload problems and offers to support peers where appropriate and have the ability to understand issues beyond own remit

    The Apprentice looks to behave professionally by adhering to the organisational code of conduct, has a ‘right first time’ approach. Shows integrity in their approach as well as demonstrate personal pride in the job through appropriate dress and positive and confident language.

    The Apprentice builds and maintains customer satisfaction with the products and services offered by their organisation in line with company policy, regulation and practice. Delivers excellent service, identifying and meeting or exceeding customer expectations.

Length of Apprenticeship

The End Point Assessment cannot be taken until the apprentice has been on programme for at least 12 months. This Apprenticeship takes approximately 13–14 months to complete.

Entry requirements

Employers set the selection criteria, but this is likely to include 5 GCSEs, including Maths and English. Some employers will accept other relevant qualifications and experience.

Apprentices without English or Maths at Level 2 must achieve this before taking the End Point Assessment.

Study Options

Whilst the apprentice is working, they are also learning, and will need to attend lessons. They can attend face-to-face classroom based lessons, LiveOnline sessions, or study OnDemand.

Classroom

With classroom learning the apprentice will get face to face lessons with a subject matter specialist. They will follow a set timetable and attend weekday, weekend or evening sessions.

LiveOnline

LiveOnline is a structured course with timetabled classes at a set time of day, but delivered online with the flexibility to study anywhere.

OnDemand

OnDemand is a tutor led online course featuring a range of specifically designed online resources, structured to keep the apprentice motivated and work through at their own pace.

This option cannot be taken on its own, however can be taken alongside a blended approach, using Classroom or LiveOnline options too.

End point assessment

Every Apprenticeship includes an End Point Assessment (EPA), assessed by an independent End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO). The apprentice will take their EPA at the end of their programme where they will demonstrate they are competent in the role that they have developed in.

This Apprenticeship Standard End Point Assessment will include:

Intray test and structured interview

This comprises of a range of evidence produced in the workplace to show that the Apprentice has met the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours detailed in the standard. The intray test is based on a fictional organisational scenario. The Structured interview is a structured discussion with an Independent Assessor to examine the portfolio of evidence and the learner journey in more detail.

Synoptic Test

The Apprentice will understand and develop the personal skills required to work effectively in a business and understand corporate social responsibility (CSR), ethics, and sustainability in the workplace. The synoptic assessment will also draw on your understanding from BTRN, BKCL and ELCO.

Progression

As well as ensuring full competency as an Accounts/Finance Assistant, this standard provides the foundation for progression onto a number of career paths in the Accounting sector including Audit Trainee, Corporate Recovery Analyst, Credit Controller or Tax Accountant. Many Apprentices will go on to complete the level 3 Assistant Accountant and Level 4, Professional Accounting/Taxation Technician standard (AAT).

Funding

This Level 2 Apprenticeship has been placed in the £6,000 funding cap. Please note that exam fees and registration fees are included in the above as the qualification is mandatory within the standard. If you are a Levy payer this means that the maximum that can be withdrawn from your Levy fund for somebody on this Apprenticeship is £6,000.

Please note that resits are not covered by the levy.

For non or marginal Levy payers (where you have overspent your Levy fund), 95% of the cost of the Apprenticeship will be funded by the government, meaning you will only have to pay 5% of the agreed price. Please contact us for more information on the Levy and funding.
