Changing your career: The relationship between technology and finance

A finance career can open up many more doors than you would initially expect.

In this episode of our Learn Better Podcast, host Stuart Pedley-Smith, Head of Learning at Kaplan, speaks to guest Neil Bertram to assess the relationship between technology and the accounting and finance marketplace.

Neil is a consultant, board director, and CFO for SMEs. He has a significant amount of experience in the finance sector that he has put to use to build a portfolio career. This term is used to describe a career that involves a variety of roles, rather than one job at a single organisation.

After COVID-19, many people questioned their futures and what they wanted to do with their lives. This led to people taking control over how and when they work, and looking at the option of multiple streams of income rather than one. More people are becoming open to the idea of a mix of full or part-time employment, freelancing or consulting, and developing a portfolio career like Neil has done.

COVID-19 was the catalyst for many people to take a long hard look at their future, and Neil showcases how you can do just that.

Key topics discussed

Neil's career

Neil talks about his 25-year career, as a CIMA-qualified professional working for Blue Chip companies. Although he appreciates the growth, progression, and lessons that he learnt throughout this experience, Neil found himself in a position where he wanted something different. This is when his eyes were opened to small enterprises outside of Blue Chip organisations.

He had the opportunity to mentor several FinTech start-ups and engage with different people with different experiences and skill sets. And so began his journey of building up a portfolio of clients and venturing into his new career.

Different types of people

Stuart asks about the different individuals and clients that Neil works with in comparison to his previous experience in the corporate world. Topics discussed are age, attitudes, and passion.

An overarching trait is that they are really passionate about their area, product or service, and improving it for the customer.

Aside from age and attitudes, Neil highlights the significance of being able to make a real impact in a smaller business.

Changing your career

Despite having such a successful career, Neil chose to take the risk and do something new, which has given him a great work-life balance and flexibility in his time.

There are a lot of SMEs out there that need financial support and advice, and they don’t need you full-time.

Confidence and transferable skills are two qualities that are highlighted as important to transform your career. Neil explains how to know when you’re ready to change your career as a finance professional, the importance of networking, and how to build a strong portfolio.
