Pennies to Pounds: Tips from a financial influencer

Season Two of Career Goals is here and features Pennies to Pounds founder, Kia Commodore.

Kia is a renowned public speaker and presenter who founded the finance platform Pennies to Pounds in 2019. Since then, Pennies to Pounds has collaborated with major brands in the financial industry and has a strong social media following of over 80,000. Kia’s successful career is evident, and she continues to show her enthusiasm for educating people about their finances and feeling confident with money.

In this episode, she offers plenty of advice, tips, and insight into her own stories and experiences to help you reach your career goals. From making a podcast successful to staying organised with a busy schedule - Pennies to Pounds founder, Kia Commodore, reveals all.

Key topics discussed

Pennies to Pounds

Kickstarting the conversation, Kelsey and Kia talk all about Pennies to Pounds, where they discuss what exactly Pennies to Pounds is, what inspired Kia to start this brand, what keeps her going, and her overall aim.

Within the discussion, we also find out more about Kia’s background and upbringing. We understand how this helped shape her into the financially responsible adult she is, eager to help others.

Word association

It’s not a Career Goals episode without a few games! And this season, we have introduced some new games to help us get to know the guests. The first game played with Kia is Word association, where Kelsey reads several words and Kia responds with the first word that comes to mind.

We see Kia’s personality and positive attitude towards several topics, particularly those that other people may view negatively. They also discuss more about apprenticeships and the benefits that they bring.

Dream commute

While Kia has a very busy schedule, she loves her work - especially as her dedication has led to opportunities to travel for work. Kelsey asks about a recent trip that Kia took to Zanzibar for work, leading to the next game: Dream commute.

In this game, Kelsey asks Kia to describe her dream commute to work. For example, we ask who Kia would be travelling with, what mode of transport, what snacks would she be eating, and what music would she be listening to.

This game helps us to find out much more about Kia’s organisation skills, goals and preferences in her work.

This or that?

Kia’s preferences are revealed in a game of ‘this or that,’ where she chooses between options such as ‘Poundland or Selfridges,’ and explains her decisions.

How to start a podcast

With over 41,000 followers on TikTok and over 25,000 followers on Instagram, there’ll be no surprises when we say that the Pennies to Pounds podcast is extremely successful - but these metrics are just the top of the iceberg for how successful the Pennies to Pounds podcast has been, and the founder and host, Kia, answers many questions about how exactly to start a podcast.

She shares her own experiences and stories while offering invaluable advice and tips on how to start a podcast.

Rank these

Kelsey reads three options for Kia to rank from best to worst. This leads to a discussion about the pros and cons of topics such as online studying, apprenticeships and university.

Final thoughts

Kia answers the closing question: what does ‘career goals’ mean to you?
