Can I transfer my apprenticeship to another employer?

Sometimes things in life just don’t turn out the way you expect them to, and that’s OK. We have to take the rough with the smooth. But if you’re in an apprenticeship and you want to leave the job you’re in, what are your options? Read on to find out more.

Firstly, is it possible to change jobs whilst doing an apprenticeship?

Absolutely, you can move jobs and keep your apprenticeship going.

You might want to do this because you want to work different hours, you’re moving to a different area, or just not getting what you need out of the position at the current company. Whatever your reason, it is possible to change jobs.

How do I transfer my apprenticeship to a new employer?

Keep in mind that transferring your apprenticeship could potentially be disruptive to your studies, so think long and hard to make sure that this is the right thing to do before you go ahead.

If you want to change employers and continue your apprenticeship, you can usually do so without interruption. Your training provider will have to agree that a new employer is suitable, so, if you’re a Kaplan apprentice, talk to your Talent Coach first if you are considering a change.

If you want to change to a completely different type of apprenticeship, you will need to end your apprenticeship and reapply for another one.

What if I’m fired or made redundant?

The main thing is not to panic! Talk to us about it and we’ll be able to help you.

The legal conditions for ending an apprenticeship differ from those for terminating other jobs, because an apprenticeship agreement is referred to as a teaching contract rather than an employment contract. If you think you were wrongly let go you should seek legal advice, as you may be able to receive compensation, not just for lost revenue but also for any teaching you might have missed out on.

We also have a dedicated recruitment team that can assist you in finding a new position. For further information please email kaplan.recruitment@kaplan.co.uk.

How to make a smooth transition

Changing jobs can be stressful, and that’s without the extra considerations of an apprenticeship, so here are some tips to make it go a little smoother.

  1. Give notice. You need to give your current employer notice in line with your contract terms. When you work your notice, make sure you remain professional and keep up the level of work you were doing before. Remember - you might need a reference in the future.
  2. Interview prep. If you need to do an interview for the next job, make sure you fully prepare for it and know the role and company well.
  3. Get to know the new company. Once you’re in the new role, ask for as many resources as you can to quickly get to know the company - be it training materials, orientation events, or shadowing co-workers.
  4. Don’t forget your studies. Starting a new role can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. You mustn’t forget that you have to do training for your apprenticeship, as well as your job.
  5. Embrace change. And finally, a new job will bring new challenges - both good and tough - so go with it, and find your place in the new environment. Remember, your talent coach and tutor are always there to support you.
