How we’re making a difference for our neurodiverse learners

In recent times, we’ve invested more of our time in providing extra support for neurodiverse learners. This blog details how we are doing that.

We know that somewhere in the region of 15 - 20% of the population are neurodivergent. “Neurodivergent” simply means someone who thinks differently from the way the majority would (referred to as neurotypical) expect.

Autism, ADHD dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, and Tourette’s syndrome are all examples of neurodiverse ways of thinking and behaving.

Some of the greatest achievements in modern history were founded by neurodivergent individuals including Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, Richard Branson and Alan Turing. We know that companies that embrace neurodiversity can gain competitive advantage in many areas — productivity, innovation, culture and talent retention.

We realise it’s important to help all our learners recognise and develop their unique skills, so that they can be used to their advantage within the workplace.

How we are helping

Over the last year we have strengthened our provision for supporting neurodiverse learners with the help of our Inclusion and Diversity Team consisting of Poppy Laila and Abbi Nolan.

Examples of how we have helped learners recently:

  • Arranged dyslexia assessments
  • Organised scribes or readers for exams
  • Provided live captioning for LOL sessions.

How to reach out

We currently work with a large number of both apprentice and qualification only learners to support their learning needs. But we know that we need to do more to reach all learners who need our support.

We’d like to take this opportunity to remind you of all the ways in which we can help:

  • If you have additional needs, please tell us about your requirements on your application form (apprentices only) or through your MyKaplan EDI profile (qualification only learners).
  • Tell your talent coach (apprentices only) or tutor
  • Email our Inclusion team als@kaplan.co.uk
  • Speak to a student services advisor via email: studentservices@kaplan.co.uk, or by calling 0161 259 7400.

Ongoing support

If you need ongoing support, one of our Inclusion team will work with you to create a support plan to ensure that all of your needs are met. They will meet (remote) regularly with you to ensure that you are on track.

We can create a range of adjustments for your learning, including providing materials in a range of formats, please refer to our Accessibility page and FAQs.

We know that every individual is different, so we will work with you to find the most appropriate solution to your learning needs.
