We're proud to announce a significant milestone in our sustainability journey.
Kaplan has officially achieved Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validation for our climate targets. This achievement reinforces our commitment to environmental responsibility and positions us among the leaders driving meaningful climate action.
What is the Science Based Targets initiative?
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global partnership that helps companies set emission reduction targets aligned with climate science. These targets provide a clear pathway for businesses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
SBTi validation isn't just about making promises, it's about setting measurable, science-backed goals that make a real difference. The initiative has validated targets for thousands of companies worldwide, creating a powerful network of organisations committed to tackling climate change.
Kaplan's validated climate targets
Following rigorous assessment by SBTi experts, our near-term science-based emissions reduction targets have been officially approved. These targets are:
- Reduce absolute scope 1 GHG emissions by 60% by 2034, using 2023 as our baseline year.
- Continue active annual sourcing of 100% renewable electricity through 2034.
- Reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions (from purchased goods and services, capital goods, business travel, upstream leased assets and upstream and downstream transportation and distribution) 35% by 2034, using 2023 as our baseline year.
Why SBTi validation matters
Our targets have been independently verified against the latest climate science, which ensures they make meaningful contributions to global climate goals. This validation provides assurance to our learners, partners, and clients that our environmental commitments are genuine and impactful.
Validated targets also give us a concrete framework for measuring progress and driving continuous improvement across our operations. By setting these targets, we can ensure alignment with our goals and maintain a focused approach to achieving sustainable growth.
Our broader environmental commitment
This SBTi validation builds on our existing environmental initiatives. We've been working steadily to reduce our carbon footprint through various measures. For example:
- Transitioning to renewable energy sources
- Implementing energy-efficient technologies across our facilities
- Promoting sustainable travel options for our teams
- Engaging suppliers who share our environmental values
- Developing digital learning solutions that reduce resource consumption.
The road ahead
Achieving SBTi validation is just the start. We now have a science-based roadmap with clear milestones for the next decade.
Reaching our 2034 targets will require further innovation across the organisation. We're exploring new technologies and partnerships to accelerate progress while maintaining the quality our learners expect.
Climate change impacts us all, and businesses play a vital role in addressing this global challenge. With our SBTi-validated targets, we are taking meaningful steps to reduce our environmental footprint. Beyond that, we aim to inspire others in the education sector to adopt science-based targets, driving collective action to confront the climate crisis.
Next steps
Our SBTi validation represents a significant milestone, but it's part of a longer journey towards environmental sustainability. We're committed to transparency, continuous improvement, and ambitious action on climate change.
Together, we're creating not just professional success, but a more sustainable future for everyone.
