1. Structure
To pass this level you’ll need to study five units (also known as subjects), which are all mandatory. Four of the units are examined individually, and the synoptic unit that you’ll take towards the end of the level incorporates two assessments, as well as drawing on all of the other units you’ve studied at this level.
Entry requirements
You should have either passed AAT Foundation (Level 2), or you may be eligible for relevant exemptions if you’ve been working in an intermediate accounts role before enrolling on this course, or have achieved relevant A Levels.
If you are starting on Level 3, we advise that you enrol onto the Kaplan 2 Day Bookkeeping course, as there is an assumption at this level that you have a good knowledge of Double Entry Bookkeeping.
If you have a university degree in accountancy, or related, we recommend that you move straight onto ACCA,
CIMA, or ACA.

3. Exams and sittings
Timings and working towards a sitting
You can take your exams at any time, apart from the synoptic exam, which is not available for one week in every four. Understanding when you want to sit and pass your exam will affect the end date of your course and what materials you receive. Please note, you’ll still need to book your exams separately. All assessments on this level are computer-based exams (CBE).
You’ll be awarded a grade (pass, merit, or distinction) based on how you perform across the qualification. Unit and synoptic assessments are not awarded grades individually, but the marks achieved in all assessments contribute to your overall grade for the qualification.

If you choose a remote exam you can sit it from the comfort of your home, on a chosen date and at a time that suits you. Your results will be released 15 days after your exam date.
You will be recorded for the whole duration of your exam, which will then be reviewed by the AAT for any irregularities.
There is an additional charge for remote invigilation compared to the standard exam price.
In order to sit these exams remotely, you need to ensure you meet the minimum supporting requirements.

How long does it take to pass?
Most students complete this level within nine to 15 months, however this varies depending on the study method you choose and whether you are completing your studies as part of an Apprenticeship, in which case you can’t complete in less than 12 months.
Recommended ways to study
You can study for each unit in isolation or as part of a more integrated programme to achieve the full Advanced Diploma qualification. We advise that you complete the Advanced Bookkeeping (AVBK) subject before studying for Final Accounts Preparation (FAPR).
Our Advanced Diploma Synoptic Assessment (ADSY) course covers the syllabus areas relating to the Ethics for Accountants (ETFA) and Spreadsheets for Accounting (SPSH) subjects, which are assessed only as part of the synoptic exam. They also provide you with an opportunity to recap on your learning from earlier subjects to ensure you are well prepared and confident ahead of the exam.

Delivery costs
subscriptions
How much it costs to deliver your study materials and how long it takes depends on where in the world you live.
Delivery fees are as follows:
- UK and NI - £7 for the first package, £7 for subsequent packages
- EU - £35 for the first package, £30 for subsequent packages
- Rest of the World - £50 for the first package, £50 for subsequent packages
Please note that due to varying interpretations of the post-Brexit EU/UK trading agreement, some EU countries are imposing import duty on the value of the goods received from the UK. It is payable by the end consumer via the delivery company and your delivery may be withheld until paid. This may vary from country to country and be up to a value of 20% of the value of the study material.
A package relates to all the materials for a specific subject, for example AAT Bookkeeping transactions (BTRN). If purchasing a course for more than one subject, the additional package charges will apply.
Delivery fees are capped at 3 x the cost, per single order. So, if you buy 5 courses for UK delivery in a single order, it will be £7 x 3, rather than £7 x 5.
Our standard delivery times for Live Online, OnDemand, Online and Distance Learning are:
- UK – 3 to 5 working days
- EU – 5 to 7 working days
- Rest of the World – 7 to 10 working days subject to availability.
Our standard delivery deadline for UK classroom courses is one week prior to the first course date.
Delivery charges apply to Classroom, Distance Learning, OnDemand, Online and Live Online courses which include printed materials. If delivery charges are applicable for your course, they will be shown during the online checkout process, before you complete your payment details.
