MP Neil Coyle visits Kaplan UK to discuss apprenticeships

MP visits Kaplan

Democracy was put into action by Kaplan apprentices during a meeting with MP, Neil Coyle.

At Kaplan, we’re passionate about shaping the future through education and skills development. This is why we were excited to host Neil Coyle, the Labour MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, at our Borough High Street centre on 9 August 2024.

Here’s what was discussed…

Championing skills development

Apprenticeships were the hot topic of conversation during Neil Coyle’s visit, as we took the opportunity to showcase the life-changing benefits that they can bring, as well as restrictions that could be improved.

Joined by our CEO, Kathy Walton, the Director of Apprenticeship Development and Delivery, Jenny Pelling, and nine of our apprentices, it was clear to see that Neil’s dedication to addressing deprivation in his constituency aligns perfectly with our mission to bridge skills gaps in the UK.

During the discussion, we explored the importance of accessible education, and how tailored apprenticeship programmes can open doors for those seeking new opportunities. We also demonstrated how apprenticeships can encourage skills development, provide solutions to local challenges, and be a powerful tool for growth - both for individuals and communities.

Real stories, real impact

The nine Kaplan apprentices who joined Neil were from prestigious organisations such as Lloyds Banking Group, HSBC, Deloitte, Amazon, Siemens, and South Eastern Railway. A clear highlight of the visit was the lively conversation between Neil and these apprentices, who shared their personal experiences, career aspirations, and the support that they’ve received so far.

It was incredibly inspiring to hear how they’ve embraced the ‘earn while you learn’ model, and how it’s allowed them to contribute financially - whether this is through saving for a mortgage or helping towards family expenses, for example.

Neil, who admitted he was relatively new to the world of professional apprenticeships, was eager to listen and learn. He even mentioned that if he were to start his career again, he’d seriously consider an apprenticeship. This level of engagement was refreshing and showcased his genuine interest in the topic.

Addressing the challenges

After Neil’s questions to the apprentices, they then had the opportunity to pose questions to the MP. They asked how their concerns about apprenticeship travel costs could be raised, as part of the discussion on the cost of living.

All of our apprentices were open and honest, resulting in Neil’s promise to raise these issues with his fellow ministers.

A lasting impression

We’re delighted to say that the day was a success for everyone involved. The apprentices spoke eloquently about their experiences and Neil Coyle was certainly impressed.

Holly-Mae Darling, one of the apprentices in attendance, summed it up perfectly:

“It was so positive, and he got to hear some fantastic real apprenticeship stories. Neil could see the impact straight away.”

Our CEO, Kathy Walton, observed:

“Neil was keen to know more about the impact that apprenticeships can have for those starting their first full-time job in an illustrious career. In September 2023 in London alone, over a thousand new apprenticeship starts in accounting were offered, of which approximately one in four were straight from school.

The apprentices did share with Neil that there is not enough consistently good career advice about apprenticeships at colleges and sixth forms. Some are even trying to remedy this for themselves, with the support of their employer, by attending careers events at their former schools, or as part of an apprenticeship ambassador network.”

At Kaplan, we’re not just about delivering qualifications, we are passionate about creating opportunities, championing the values of practical learning, and building a brighter future. Visits like this one highlight the importance of our work and the lasting impact that apprenticeships can have on individuals and society.
