How a Data Analyst apprenticeship is helping Ciccone Blackwood build future-ready data skills

As businesses become increasingly data-driven, professionals who can confidently analyse, interpret, and communicate data are more valuable than ever. For Ciccone Blackwood, developing those skills further through a Data Analyst apprenticeship was a natural next step in her career.

With experience across insurance, fintech, payroll, and finance systems, Ciccone had already built a strong foundation in reporting and finance operations. But by studying the Data Analyst apprenticeship with Kaplan, she’s now strengthening her technical knowledge, improving her digital confidence, and applying new skills directly within the workplace.

From enhancing reporting processes to developing more efficient ways of working, the apprenticeship is already helping her make a meaningful impact in her organisation while supporting her long-term career goals.

Building a career across finance and data

Ciccone’s career journey began with an administration apprenticeship in insurance before progressing into a variety of finance-focused roles.

“I have experience working across multiple areas in finance, starting out in insurance, then moving into fintech, payroll, and now finance systems,” she explains.

Throughout each role, data and reporting remained a consistent interest.

“Early in my career, I completed an administration apprenticeship in insurance, and since then I’ve continued to develop my reporting and data skills in each role.”

That passion for data analysis ultimately led her to the Data Analyst apprenticeship.

“I chose to complete the Data Analyst apprenticeship because it combines my passion for data with the financial knowledge needed to better understand and interpret the data I work with daily.”

Developing practical data and reporting skills

One of the biggest benefits of the apprenticeship has been the opportunity to immediately apply learning within the workplace.

Although only a few months into the programme, Ciccone has already seen clear improvements in her technical skills and confidence when working with data.

“Since starting the programme, I’ve already seen improvements in my skills — particularly in Excel.”

As part of the apprenticeship, Ciccone completed the Microsoft Excel Associate qualification, helping her strengthen her technical capabilities and work more efficiently with reporting tasks.

“The data literacy module has also supported me in developing reports more effectively, helping to future-proof my skills in a data-driven environment.”

These skills have already contributed to real workplace improvements. Recently, Ciccone was asked to develop reports designed to streamline processes for management accountants within the finance department.

“This allowed me to apply my learning in a practical way and contribute towards improving efficiency within the team.”

Alongside technical development, the apprenticeship has also increased her confidence using digital tools and data more strategically.

“I’ve seen improvements in my data capability and digital confidence, particularly when working with Excel and reporting tasks. I’m now more efficient in how I approach data and more confident in using tools to produce meaningful outputs.”

Balancing work and study

Like many apprentices, one of the biggest challenges has been learning how to balance studying alongside a full-time role.

“One of the main challenges has been adjusting to balancing work and study,” says Ciccone.

However, she found the structure and flexibility of the programme helped make the workload manageable.

“The structure of the programme provides enough time to complete the work without feeling overwhelmed.”

Ciccone also highlights the support she has received throughout her apprenticeship journey from both Kaplan and her employer.

“My line manager, talent coach Aima, and tutors have all been very supportive.”

The combination of live online lessons and pre-learning resources has helped make the content more accessible and easier to follow.

“The format of the live lessons is easy to follow and, combined with the pre-learning, makes the content more accessible.”

As a learner with dyslexia, having access to additional support and resources has also made a significant difference.

“Kaplan has supported me by providing resources in advance to help with my dyslexia, and my talent coach is always available to provide clear and constructive feedback.”

Study tips for apprenticeship learners

For anyone considering an apprenticeship or struggling with their studies, Ciccone encourages learners not to expect instant perfection.

“Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to understand everything immediately. Many concepts will be new, and that’s part of the learning process.”

Her top study tips include:

  • Writing notes by hand before typing them into a simplified format
  • Creating a formula and keyword bank to support revision
  • Using interactive tools like Quizlet to make revision more engaging

Looking ahead

As she continues progressing through the apprenticeship, Ciccone is focused on building a long-term career in systems reporting and process improvement.

“My goal is to progress into a senior systems reporting role, where I can use my knowledge and experience to develop efficient processes and reporting solutions that add real value.”

Reflecting on the experience so far, she says the apprenticeship has already had a positive impact on both her confidence and career development.

“Overall, the apprenticeship has been a really positive experience so far, and I’m excited to continue building my skills as I progress.”
