At 32, Tom Towart had already experienced a wide range of roles from admin and IT to forensic casework. But like many people navigating their career path, he hadn’t yet found the role that truly clicked.
That changed when he discovered accountancy.
Today, Tom is studying AAT Level 2 with Kaplan, achieving strong results and building a clear path into the finance industry. His journey hasn’t been straightforward but it’s a powerful example of how the right support, at the right time, can make all the difference.
From uncertainty to opportunity
Before starting his studies, Tom was facing a number of personal and financial challenges. While supporting his family and managing his own mental health, he was also trying to self-study without clear direction or structured support.
“I was a bit lost,” he explains. “I lacked confidence and didn’t really know where I wanted to go. But I always enjoyed working with numbers, looking at data, problem-solving, and the finance side of my roles.”
Determined to build a future in accountancy, Tom began searching for support online. That’s when he discovered bursary opportunities.
After an unsuccessful application elsewhere, he came across Kaplan.
“I didn’t really think anything would come from it,” he says. “But I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. I’m forever grateful Kaplan gave me that opportunity.”
Why the bursary mattered
For Tom, the bursary wasn’t just financial support, it was a turning point.
“Being awarded the bursary meant the world to me. I’ve always felt like I had to do everything myself, so having someone believe in me and support me. It was huge.”
The bursary provided the structure, guidance and confidence he needed to move forward.
“It gave me the foundation I needed to achieve my goals. I finally had direction — what to study, how to study, and the support to keep going.”
Building confidence through learning
Since joining Kaplan, Tom has gone from uncertainty to achievement earning Merit grades in his first two modules and progressing confidently through his studies.
“The support has been beyond amazing,” he says. “From tutors to workshops on CVs and LinkedIn, I’ve never had this level of support before.”
He also credits the experience with helping him rebuild his confidence:
“Kaplan hasn’t just helped me professionally, they’ve helped me believe in myself again.”
More than expected
Going into the course, Tom didn’t have clear expectations, but the experience has exceeded anything he imagined.
“Each session prepares you for what you’ll face in exams, and the support doesn’t stop there. You can reach out to tutors anytime, and MyKaplan is always there if you need it.”
For learners who may feel unsure or overwhelmed, that accessibility can make all the difference.
Tom’s top study tips
For anyone currently studying or thinking about starting. Tom shares three simple but effective tips:
- Repetition is key: “If you’re struggling, keep going over it even with the same question. It will click eventually.”
- Make notes visible: “I use sticky notes on my wall for key formulas and concepts, they’re always in sight.”
- Ask for help: “Don’t worry about your pace or asking questions. Chances are, someone else is wondering the same thing.”
Looking ahead
Tom’s immediate goal is to complete his Level 2 qualification and secure a role in finance. From there, he plans to progress to Level 3, Level 4, and eventually pursue CIMA.
“Achieving this qualification is my foundation. It proves to me that I can succeed in this industry — and gives me confidence in a very competitive job market.”
The impact of the AAT bursary
Tom’s story highlights the real impact bursaries can have, not just on careers, but on confidence, access and opportunity.
As Sally Brummitt, Senior Curriculum Manager at Kaplan, explains:
