ICT apprenticeship success: Hamsa Elmi’s journey with Kaplan

Hamsa Elmi

We caught up with ICT apprentice, Hamsa Elmi. He currently works as a Support Analyst in IT and is training via an Information Communications Technician (ICT) (Level 3) apprenticeship with Kaplan.

Getting started

Starting an ICT apprenticeship at Kaplan was genuinely one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. From day one, I felt eager to learn, contribute and grow into a valuable team member, and this programme made it entirely possible.

When I first started my role, before the apprenticeship, I was responsible for conducting basic administrative tasks, such as stock counts and updating spreadsheets and systems, while also taking courses and shadowing my colleagues.

Real skill development

My apprenticeship wasn’t just a case of attending a few courses. I was pushed to significantly improve skills like problem-solving and communication. Plus, I gained exposure to some really cool technologies like cloud computing, networking, and basic scripting.

These experiences went far beyond what a typical service desk agent would encounter so early in their career. They’ve not only expanded my technical skills, but they’ve also given me a huge boost in my career development.

Support

What made this apprenticeship truly exceptional was the incredible support I’ve received. The entire team and management were fantastic, and always there to help and encourage me.

I have to give a huge shout-out to my Talent Coach, Vince. He quickly understood where I was at and helped me tackle challenges, arranging extra training to help me catch up on a topic I’d missed.

It also really helped to have access to recordings of the online classes so I could revisit the material when needed.

More than just a programme

The apprenticeship isn’t just about ticking boxes. It was all about my growth, learning, and genuine career development. The combination of practical experience, supportive colleagues, a supportive Talent Coach, and my resources all contributed to making my ICT apprenticeship a success.

I’m so grateful for this opportunity, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking to launch their career in IT.
