ICT Apprenticeship success story: Sebastian Zoledziejewski

When Sebastian Zoledziejewski (Seb) first heard about Kaplan’s ICT Level 3 apprenticeship, he wasn’t sure if it would be the right decision. As a full-time IT Analyst with a busy family life, the idea of balancing work, learning, and other commitments felt daunting.

However, recognising the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally, Seb decided to take on the challenge. What followed was a rewarding journey of skill development.

Here’s how Seb conquered obstacles, utilised support, and excelled in his apprenticeship.

What initially motivated you to pursue the ICT Apprenticeship programme with Kaplan?

When I was first offered the opportunity, my primary concern was finding the time to balance the demands of the programme with my family life, particularly with two teenage daughters.

Given that I was already working full-time as an IT Analyst, and there was no external pressure to undertake the apprenticeship, I initially wavered. However, recognising the potential for growth, I ultimately decided to embrace the challenge.

How did your employer support you throughout the apprenticeship?

I’m incredibly grateful that my employer not only supported me in making the decision to undertake the apprenticeship, but they also offered flexible working hours to complete the programme, which was instrumental to my success.

What was it like returning to formal education after a long break?

Initially, the transition back to a formal learning environment after many years was a significant adjustment. It felt like my world had turned upside down.

However, the unwavering guidance and support from Kaplan’s team made all the difference. My personal Talent Coaches and highly knowledgeable tutors were there for me every step of the way, helping me quickly adapt and get into the right mindset for conventional learning.

Did you experience any challenges during the apprenticeship?

Work commitments occasionally necessitated rescheduling the timetable. I was impressed by how efficiently these transitions were handled, ensuring minimal disruption to my learning journey. However, the most significant challenge from my end was achieving the delicate work-life-apprenticeship balance, which certainly required some personal sacrifices.

There were some smaller bumps along the way. For example, organisational challenges meant that I had some transitions between Talent Coaches, which occasionally created some minor challenges in maintaining consistency, especially with keeping my journal up to date. However, although it was sometimes difficult to sync expectations, the quality of support I received from each coach ensured I never fell behind.

What positive outcomes did you gain from the experience?

Despite some challenges, my confidence steadily grew as I actively participated in diverse projects and gained exposure to various areas of the business. This broad experience was a definite bonus, helping me satisfy the apprenticeship criteria and deepen my understanding of IT within a real-world context.

Do you have any final words of encouragement for future learners?

If I did it, so can you!
